Brisingr - The Third Book In The Inheritance Cycle

Brisingr (The Inheritance Cycle), the third book in The Inheritance Cycle was released on September 20, 2008. Author Christopher Paolini intended to conclude the then Inheritance Trilogy,Inheritance (Eragon / Eldest / Brisingr) (The Inheritance Cycle), in three books, but while writing the third book he determined the story of Eragon and his beloved dragon, Saphira, too complex to conclude in one book. Thus,Inheritance (Inheritance Cycle, Book 4), the fourth book in the  series was written and completed the series of books called The Inheritance Cycle.

Brisingr picks up right after Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) (The Inheritance Cycle), the second book in the series, ends. Eragon and his dragon, Saphira continue their quest to conquer the corrupt ruler, Galbatorix in the fictional land of Alagaesia. Eragon is one of the few dragon riders left and King Galbatorix is out to find him and his dragon and destroy them for fear of being overthrown.

The beginning of the book starts as Eragon, Saphira and Roran are traveling  to Helgrind, there they rescue Katrina, who was being held prisoner and betrothed to Roran. Eragon stays behind to kill the Razac’s while Saphira, Roran and Katrina go back to the Varden. Once Eragon returns, he finds that Katrina is pregnant and a wedding is being planned. Before the wedding can begin, a small troop accompanied by Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn, attack but Eragon and Saphira win the battle with help from Elven spell casters and Roran and Katrina are married.

Eragon is then ordered by the leader of the Varden to go to the Boer Mountains for an election of the new Dwarf king. Oromis is elected and after his coronation, Eragon and Saphira return to Ellesmera for more training. Once there, Oromis and his dragon, Glaedr, tell Eragon that his deceased mentor, Brom, is Eragon’s father and reveal the scource of King Galbatorix’s power.

The scource behind his power is Eldunarya, or heart of hearts. The holder of an Eldunari can communicate with or draw energy from the dragon it belongs to, even a deceased dragon. Galbatorix collected Eldunarya through the years, and forced deceased dragons to give him their energy through their Eldunarya. Eragon visits Rhunon, an Elven blacksmith who forges swords, and he forges one for Eragon and named it, Brisingr. Before they leave for the Varden, the dragon of Oromis, Glaedr, give his Eldunari to Eragon and Saphira to fight the Empire along with the Queen of the Elves, Islanzadi.

Roran is sent on a mission with a military to attack a convoy of supply wagons that are guarded by enchanted soldiers. The commander loses a hand in the battle and they suffer many casualties. The new commander almost causes a defeat against an army that is raiding a village, but Roran gives new orders and kills 193 enemies and defeats the enemy. Roran gets charged for insubordination and receives a flogging in public. Roran is then appointed commander of a group of men and Urgals.

When his squad returns to the Varden they join the siege of Feinster, and Eragon rescues Arya, the Elf and has a vision through Glaedr’s Eldunari showing Murtaugh and Oromis fighting. Galbatorix possesses Murtaugh and when Oromis suffers a seizure, Galbatorix makes Murtaugh kill Oromis and his dragon, Glaedr. Magicians manage to create a Shade Varaug, and Arya kills him with Eragons help. The seige ends and Nasuada tells Eragon the plan for invading the Empire.

And that is the end of Brisingr, the third book in The Inheritance Cycle. This is just a summary, so to get the full story you have to get the dragon books!

Eldest – The Second Book

Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) (The Inheritance Cycle) is the second book in The Inheritance Cycle written by Christopher Paolini. This book is about the continued adventures of Eragon and his beloved dragon Saphira.  It is centered around his further training as a dragon rider and his journey to the land of the Elves.

The Setting

The setting takes place in the dwarf city of Tronjheim, in the hollowed mountain of Farthen Dur, which is in the southeastern part of Alagaesia. Alagaesia is the fictional continenet where the Inheritance Cycle takes place.

Get Eragon’s Guide to Alagaesia (The Inheritance Cycle) for more understanding of where the action is taking place in the series. Farthen Dur is in the southeastern part of the city, Ellesmera, the elven capital city is in the forest of Du Weldenvarden, in the north. The small town of Carvahall is in the northwestern part of Alagaesia in Palancar Valley. Aberon the capital of Surda, is in the southern part of Alagaesia. That sets up where most of the action takes place in Eldest.

The Plot

When Eragon and Saphira get to Du Weldenvarden they meet Oromis, the cripple who is whole and his dragon, Glaedr. They are the only rider and dragon secretly alive besides Galbatorix and his forcibly bonded dragon, Shruikan. Oromis and his dragon are both crippled and must hide from Galbatorix to keep from having to fight. They teach Eragon and Saphira the use of combat, logic, scholarship and magic theory, along with many other things.

Eragons training is discouraged when he begins having seizures multiple times a day from the scar on his back. Eragon and Saphira have fallen for Arya, the elf maiden, and her dragon, Glaedr, but their efforts to win their affections fails but this brings Eragon and Saphira closer together. At an Ancient Elven ceremony called, Agaeti Blodhren, or the Blood-Oath Celebration, a spectral dragon alters Eragon senses, enhances his abilities and turns him into an elf-human hybrid, and heals all his wounds. When Arya rejects Eragons affections, he leaves without completing his training. Before he leaves he is given a bow with magical arrows, a belt with 12 priceless gems , an enchanted flask of elvish concoction, a copy of his poem and is blessed by Oromis and Glaedr.

This isn’t where this book ends but I don’t want to spoil it for anybody, so you’ll have to get the book Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) (The Inheritance Cycle) to find out what happens. And be on the lookout for my review in the next few days on the third book in the Inheritance Series called Brisingr (Inheritance, Book 3) (The Inheritance Cycle). This series of books is a must read for anyone who loves adventure, fantasy and dragons of course. I still suggest getting the movie after you have read the books, but my son says it doesn’t matter, because everybody knows the books are more in depth and give all the little details that complete the story.
